Radio Soulwax at Brixton Academy
Friday was all about seeing 2 Many DJs at Brixton Academy. We met up with Gavin and Candid for a catch up drink and found out they were playing from 12:30am. The queue was enormous but didn't take too long to get searched and enter the foyer which was getting the 'second room' treatment from a couple of DJs. Whilst we were about to get searched a right stoner in front was asked by security if he had any drugs. He answered yes(!) and questeioned whether they would still let him in?! Dude! At least try and hide them then lie!
Pat and James from LCD Soundsystem were the main support DJs weren't going down very well mainly due to the sound quality. Only by turning up the EQ to maximum did they get any reaction though its mostly to do with being under the balcony. By about midnight it was getting seriously rammed and Kerry, who unfortunately had some minor skin surgery earlier with stomach stitches, was getting knocked about too much.
Thankfully, the Belguim heroes came on in good time with one of them dressed in a dinner jacket with waht looked like a remote/radio controller. We were sure he had a radio controlled car or something but adjusting our ears it was if he was adjusted a radio frequency tuning into a broadcast station. As the frequency got clearer, the DJ movable stage came out of the curtain to be joined by his brother. What an entrance!
The set itself was a typical but classic mashup of their old favourites with one or two surprise choices. But the main difference was the background video as they had commissioned every track they played to be animated using the record sleeve artwork. At first there was very little animation but almost a colourful playlist. It wasn't until the MGMT track you realised the Monty Python style cartoon making the characters dance. The crowds were getting too pushy by then so exited for the balcony where the sound quality improved 100%. Dolly Parton, Blue Monday, David Bowie, Prodigy were some of the highlights. We even found at the top a place to dance, get a great view, have good sound quality and a wall to place our drinks without getting shoved, pushed or knocked down. Bliss! Quite pleased with the video I took below which is their David Bowie mashup.
We left after 2ManyDJs though Riton did sound quite good. Almost had a Twitter argument who thought the performance was cheese though admitted he'd never seen them before.
