Budgieman beats Tate Modern

Image
Budgieman Originally uploaded by Ginger DJ . Lady Vengence was rented by post. I was persuaded by a free trial of Screen Select so gave it a whirl and got a quick turnaround. This was the third of the vengence trilogy from South Korea. Oldboy still topping the favourites and Sympathy for Mr Vengence getting a slashed-wrist thumbs up. The story goes that a woman has recently been released from prison for a kidnapping she didn't commit. Throughout her stay she's accumulated some inmate friends to help her revenge with some great background stories. Again the director/writer shows some unique insight to the Korean underworld with clever twists and direction though never out shines Oldboy. Its the last twist that brings the story to a new level with characters questionning their own morality. After that the film extends its welcome too long. Sunday was an early start (for Sunday that is) getting the slow train to London for shopping and visiting the Icespace experience plus t

My mid-week mood check

Image
My mid-week mood check is bland and skint. There's a few things on the wallet-thinning radar coming up. Shame my payday isn't sooner or bigger. If there's anyone who fancies a themed London trip here's the perfect setup:- Below Zero bar is your Absolut vodka bar made out of ice! For a couple of months there's the Icespace experience . You can buy tickets here . Though just found out its £21 entry fee. Other than that we're still holding off buying tickets for Global Gathering since they've announced Daft Punk to be doing the Friday. As well as Weekend camping tickets, GG are only selling Saturday day tickets. I'm sure they're doing this on purpose to sell more tickets but after last year's queuing marathon. Whilst getting excitement at seeing Daft Punk live and considering a costume to celebrate their UK return, I came across this link of someone beating me to it - When Geeks do Halloween . I also found out that after their 5555 Interste

Rain, rain...just f*ck off!

After my dental episode I was glad to get out of it with our favourite Oz adventurers, Emma and James back from their travels for a couple of weeks. It was a perfect antidote with tales of 4x4 camping, pizzas, amazing photos, boshing, games and some poker. We were also introduced to some Australian radio which made Radio 1 sound like Deja Vu FM with its constant rotation of same songs. Triple J played some great indie rock stuff along with classic housey doings and Oz bands mixed in. Saturday was almost a write-off with the rain. The evening was really dedicated to the cheesiest event of the year, the Eurovision Song Contest . It was your normal laugh at the strangeness of the Euro acts, put up with the leggy pop-tripe or Euro-trance naff and celebrate anything that dared fuse their own country's tradition music with pop songness. Lithuania were quite clever though the audience didn't like their cheekiness, Russia came second but the piano smuggler act was rubbish, Germany

Loathe injection

Image
As well my this blog, my FlickR photos and my YouTube , I have another online presence in support for Kerry. Seems that everyone has MySpace including all the decent bands, DJs, whatever. Luckily I'm the only GingerDJ on this networking monster. I appreciate how much you can do with this site but I'm still dedicated to what I've already got. Here's a couple of more links to bookmark:- MySpace/GingerDJ MySpace/LilMisMayhem Quick mention about this week's hot gossip topic, Big Brother . I can't believe that these people exist in real life. I've told myself not to watch it as usual but this junk-food TV maybe the only thing to talk about. This morning was my second of two visits to the dentist to renew my fillings. The cheery, choir-singing dentist I have and the new hi-tech dentist chair with mouth camera and TV monitor couldn't raise my excitment levels of having injections. The first was okay which I could have put down to some ancient kung

Mighty Boosh mini-pop

Image
You can't NOT love this type of thing. Whether it's guessing who they are or looking in wonder at how a few coloured pixels can translate into iconic pop-art heroes. Mighty Boosh has made it to this heady heights of cult fame and I see even My Name is Earl has one too. Check out the original source at FlipFlopFlyin Other news is that Global Gathering have released Saturday only tickets. Problem though is that they haven't said when any of the acts are on.

Japanese TV told you so

Image
Whilst on holiday in Japan last year we were able to witness some strange stuff on telly. Now after trawling through both YouTube and Metacafe I can finally prove to you such weirdness did happen. Here's a taster for you:- Do not laugh - Contestants get punished for laughing Hard Gay Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3 - Dressed in a kinky biker outfit, this TV personality goes round Japan surprising people with problems. His catchphrase is 'Woo!' whilst jiggling his bits More Hard Gay (see video below) - Another personal problem sorted. This is the funniest one! A good example of Kaso Taisho - if you remember the Pepsi Max advert with the kung-fu sequence, this is where they nicked the idea. Show TV Karate Gachapin - After seeing this at the Fuji TV studios in Tokyo I bought the DVD for this kid's programme. Unfortunately it was a bit of an overload. (See 6th Oct 05)

Dumped by bitch-in-lowprofiles

Image
Not the most eventful weekend to report. Kerry's company has decided to annoy their staff by changing their car scheme rules so the Audi A3 affair is over. Both of us are a little cut up about this but the costs to keep the high-maintenance turbo diesel madame were too much. Instead Kerry's been looking at a Seat equivalent without the 4WD. We test drove the Ibiza and Leon, and looks like the bigger model, Leon will be the next one. It didn't quite have the ride quality as the German supermodel but came pretty close. I hope the Audi keeps in touch with how she's doing with her new sugar-daddy. I'm gonna miss my bitch-in-low profiles. Sunday was another low action day biking around Southampton. There was an Ideal Home show on the Common but looked rubbish especially as it was a fiver to get in. Instead we headed into town and treated ourselves to a Fopp shop. I can't stop listening to Modular presents: Leave them all behind , a superb mix of indie stuff whi

Fonejacker

Image
Whilst we were glued to Lost on E4 last night we recorded a new Channel 4 comedy called Fonejacker . If anyone remembers Victor Lewis-Smith 's crank calls you'll know what I mean. Here's the synopsis from the Channel 4 website:- COMEDY LAB: FONEJACKER: 11pm Comedy Lab, Channel 4's unique televisual experiment which unearths the comedy stars of tomorrow, returns for its ninth year with eight new episodes across the week. Previous uncovered talent includes Peter Kay , Jimmy Carr , Dom Joly and Big Brother's Big Mouth presenter Russell Brand . Addicted to prank calling , Fonejacker is a man who takes on various guises to satisfy his need to scam and confuse anyone at the end of a phone line. Recurring characters include George the African Scamster, an amiable chap who rings to let you know that you have won a cash prize, funded by the 1ps and 2ps that people have collected in jars and forgotten about. In order to obtain your cash prize all you have to do is give G

Getting E3xcited about Wii

Image
Ok, Geek Rob here getting very excited with the next generation of video-games. This week is the industry's prime-time show, E3 in Los Angeles . Although I spent half my lunchtime sunning myself on the Uni campus looking at the local ducks waddle around, I've also been looking at videos, hot-off-the-press, where Nintendo and Sony have been showcasing their new wares. Sony has been going through some troubles getting its blu-ray technology in check and had to delay the Playstation 3 release. Will it be worth the wait? First on my shopping list though is the Nintendo Wii with its unique controller and the new Zelda game. Could this be Nintendo's golden ticket? YouTube looks like THE place to see the latest news in video format. Here's what I've been watching and want to share with you in excitment order: Excited - the new Metal Gear Solid 4 game on the PS3 - MGS4 E3 video Very excited - the Tennis game on the Wii demonstrated by Games-god Miyamoto

Lost and Found Hanso

Image
Mid-week blogging time means another Lost entry. At this moment in time we're watching the Channel 4 Lost and normally would skip or ignore the adverts. Instead the first break ended with a commercial from a company called the Hanso Foundation . In case you missed it we thought it was another guise for the god-squad like the Alpha Course , only with more advertising budget. Curiosity got the better of me and I was straight on the Google . Hanso was the very first result with this website . Without looking at the result's summary the site read like a creepy scientific organsiation led by visionaries wanting a better world. Check it out for yourselves! Turn of the screw book was pulled out by Locke when looking for the Orientation film. Another Scooby Doo mystery. Checked out Amazon and found this: Synopsis: The narrator is a young governess, sent off to a country house to take charge of two orphaned children. She finds a pleasant house and a comfortable housekeeper, w

Sympathy for Mr Sickboy

Image
What I thought was hayfever all day Friday was in fact a crappy, stinking cold which ruined my plans for the weekend. Boredom switched on Resident Evil 4 which served well almost all weekend. In the evening we tried to rent Lady Vengence but came away with the first of the three Korean revenge films, Sympathy for Mr. Vengence . We'd bought Old Boy and were well impressed by its style and multi-twisting plot so expected more the same here. Chan-Wook Park directed it with his usual excellent style and originality but it wasn't the sort of thing you needed if you'd recently needed a kidney transplant, had your daughter kidnapped or just coming off the happiness prescription. As I said there's some great moments of shock, originality and vengence ideas with a last minute twist for the Korean's trademark. World Cup fever is warming up on the media front and shops selling those crappy car flags. Saw this through the Mighty Boosh mailing list I'm on (I think it

Hill, thrills and bellyache

Image
It was Orange Wednesday last night and Silent Hill watched. It was a long time since we played the game so remembering any of the plot was going to be tricky. Quite surprised to see Sean Bean as the husband trying to do a Yankee accent but it came out all 'ee by gum'. With the scene set for the reason to visit Silent Hill, the good stuff came along with the town looking satisfactorily familiar to the game and monsters looking creepy. Bit toned down though with the 15 certificate but the big pyramid-head guy and demon nurses twitching like the dancers from Kylie 'Can't get you out of my head' looked good. Towards the end though I started thinking where this was all going and most of the plot tension had disappeared making the conclusion a bit flat. I remember completing the game then getting the wrong ending and couldn't be arsed trying again. Bit like the film really, I enjoyed the creepy bits and style but like unwrapping a large present it turned out to b

Southampton hosts London Stella fan club

Image
Weekend welcomed Kev and Karol to stay in preparation for Kerry's surprise meal on Saturday. Kev wanted to see the largest passenger boat in the world which had docked into Southampton for the weekend. Unfortunately, everyone else in the South did too with driving taking as long as walking into town making roundabouts into priority battlefields. After a few weeks of planning it was great to see Kerry's reaction at Paul, Sarah, Steve, Sam, Viv and Trev waiting for us in the restaurant = Priceless! Good to see another style change for Paul. After Pirate Paul, Trucker Paul, we were treated to Two-Tone Paul with cool mod hat and pin-stripe jacket. For some though he was the usual target for unfair and unjust mockery who has influenced thousands with What Pirate magazine. Expect a new title for newsagent stands very soon as Paul models the Peckham dodgy dealer look, with Mickey Pierce from Only Fools and Horses as inspiration. After the excitement calmed down and we'd ordere
