Day 11 - Okinawa: Hot like Fever

Whiter than sand

Weather had cleared a bit and was roasting a good 30 degrees C! Down on the beach we regrettably paid the 3175 Yen for a couple of sun loungers and beach umbrella which is about £15 a day. Sea was nice and warm only the prickly beach of broken coral made it uncomfortable. Used our breakfast voucher for a late lunch, an all you can eat buffet with melon soda refills – Yay! Back to the beach for more rays but a little too much for me (and not enough cream application) burning my pasty white skin.

Plan A was to get a hire car but language and given phone number didn’t work. Plan B was to go to the Airport by bus and organise the car from there only that an accident and a lot of traffic in Naha resorted to Plan C to stop in town and do souvenir shopping. Kerry’s health was deteriorating quickly with flu like symptoms and the lack of any good gifts brought our trip to almost a waste of time (over 2 hours by bus) and a lot of effort. We ended up in a cool restaurant/bar and ordered a meal. We were able to use their Mac to check email and add to the blog. As this happened a local musician played the Okinawan Mandolin mixed in with some electronic effects which resulted in some great ambient music. So good I bought all 4 CDs at £5 each. Met the guy and with his excellent English found out he had links with an internet radio station called Forest Sounds in London. Also met his Italian friend named Loike who was a film-maker and had done an art documentary on a local dancer. Couldn’t be arsed facing another bus trip through treacle like traffic so forked out for a taxi and went straight to sleep as Kerry felt awful.

Unfortunately Kerry turned for the worse and at 4am I had to arrange with the non-English speaking reception to arrange a taxi for the local A&E. What a nightmare! Doctors spoke good English but had never heard of Paracetamol or come across simple chest infections. I was getting quite angry and Kerry wanted to go home to the UK. Eventually we made it clear (after 5 attempts) that all we needed was Amoxicilan, even though Jap doctors insist their patients battle it on their own. Another medical bill of 7800 Yen.
