Super Dynamite Boogaloo

Another DVD catch-up, this time A Scanner Darkly - which was okay. Using Waking Life’s graphical technique, it had some good, quirky, hallucinogenic moments but couldn’t quite sell the story for the full duration.

After a little in-decision to go for Big Chill next weekend due to the rain and lack of holiday from work, we committed ourselves by buying a pop-up tent. The weather forecast seems to be more settled and a friendly chat with my new boss has allowed me a half day of Friday. Bring on the Chill!

Saturday evening was a visit to Brighton’s comedy night, Komedia – Super Dynamite Boogaloo – hoping for cabaret but got school disco with Mackenzie Crook from The Office DJing (rubbishly - couldn’t mix and his selection went from rockin’ to shockin’). The highlights were a huge black guy with impressive ‘fro in a pink leotard and another guy (Boogaloo Stu) dressed as pictured. The crowd were a mix of hen night gaggles and a few desperate single blokes. Later a wanna-be tranny who was staggering around in stilettos holding a pint and bottle of wine entertained us. The music didn’t improve and we realised no cabaret would be appearing so made for the dancefloor for one tune with the hope it got better. It didn’t as Spice Girls – Wannabe came on so we left.

Doh...have you never been to Boogaloo? Cabaret was at around 12.30 and was bloody brilliant...that guy in the pink 'fro is Le Gateau Chocolat is an amazing opera singer and did a couple of stunning musical numbers among other delights.

F*&k! I knew we left too early. Thanks for the tip, we'll try next time and ignore the Spice Girls until the fun really starts.

The Mighty Boosh new live show review

Thanks to my Modwolves fan club connections I managed to win exclusive tickets to see the brand new live show from the Mighty Boosh on Saturday. After our (unsuccessful) Thames boat ride we made our way over to 3 Mills TV studios in Bromley on Bow. If you don't want to know what's in the new live show then you'd best not read this as it will spoil the surprise. However if you want to know a summary of how it went then I'll say now, the performance was slightly worrying with only a week to go. There's a lot more mini-sketches and no real story compared to the previous tour. There's some great gags, some surprises but if it wasn't for their natural talent and personality the show would be slightly disappointing. Hopefully they'll put in some practice, improve the sketches that didn't quite work and maybe even come up with some new ideas. So, if you really don't want to know what happens in the show stop reading now, you have been warned. Mighty Boo
