Star Trek review

Wow! If the Star Trek franchise was a soft drink it would be Pepsi with the newest incarnation as Pepsi Max. Basically, strap yourself in for one of the fastest cinema rides in ages which will leave you breathless. JJ Abrams, he of Lost and Mission Impossible 3 fame, has directed an alternative legend with the best original characters. However, the film has subtly included some classic lines that everyone wants to hear again with a dash of tongue in cheek. All this adds a comedy sparkle which any level of fan will enjoy as well as pleasing the non-SciFi viewers.

It starts with how Kirk is born then efficiently peddles out the backstory of the soon-to-be captain and Spock's childhood upbringing. Some years later we see how Kirk joins Starfleet Academy then the real story and action unfolds.

The casting is excellent. In one scene, Chris Pine playing Kirk actually captures Shatner's swagger, speech and posture, whilst Karl Urban (remember him from Lord of the Rings) gets in the line of 'I'm a doctor Jim, not a (insert word here)'. Simon Pegg did ok as Scotty, coming in quite late into the film and provided some well-timed light relief. His accent was slightly dodgy but delivered more classic lines we were all expecting.

Overall, the franchise will live long and prosper, and I can't wait to see some more.

Yeah, I agree about Scottys accent! By the way, clarify something for me please? At the end of the film are we left in an alternative timeline from there on? No Vulcan, no Romulus. No Amanda (Spocks mum). If so, doesn't that imply that the whole of the Next Generation Series 'was a dream'. Sounds a bit like Bobby Ewing getting out of the shower in Dallas years ago all over again. If my assumption is correct, I'm surprised no one else has pointed this out. That would mean no Jean Luc Picard (possibly). After all, everything usually changes... The 'Enterprise' series is safe because those events predated the film. Please tell me what you think? I'm very curious about this... And another thing, I thought Doctor Who only had 11 lives... Gosh I'm being a geek today!!! lol.

Yes, you're right, it will be an alternative universe. Next Generation will still happen but they'll now deny there ever made the Romulan episodes cutting the series by about 24 episodes, including the evil Tasha Yar. Kerry still can't get her head round that there's moe than one Enterprise and asks why newer Enterprises are like I, II, III, VI etc.

The Mighty Boosh new live show review

Thanks to my Modwolves fan club connections I managed to win exclusive tickets to see the brand new live show from the Mighty Boosh on Saturday. After our (unsuccessful) Thames boat ride we made our way over to 3 Mills TV studios in Bromley on Bow. If you don't want to know what's in the new live show then you'd best not read this as it will spoil the surprise. However if you want to know a summary of how it went then I'll say now, the performance was slightly worrying with only a week to go. There's a lot more mini-sketches and no real story compared to the previous tour. There's some great gags, some surprises but if it wasn't for their natural talent and personality the show would be slightly disappointing. Hopefully they'll put in some practice, improve the sketches that didn't quite work and maybe even come up with some new ideas. So, if you really don't want to know what happens in the show stop reading now, you have been warned. Mighty Boo
