24 Dec - Xmas Eve in Nha Trang
Our free, lazy day in Nha Trang was rudely started at 6am thanks to a tannoy broadcasting Communist propaganda then an hour later with the local school doing marching band practice. Not happy. The hotel room windows are thin and rattle with all traffic noise impossible to block out. Kerry was still feeling rough so I went to breakfast on my own. At least they had coco pops!
Dressed in my Buddy the Elf t-shirt for 9am we headed for the docks for our boat trip around the islands. At the docks was a Vietnamese guy dressed in a Santa suit but the t-shirt didn't get any attention. On board were a couple of ladies for massage and manicures. Kerry took advantage of the snorkling opportunity but the tide was a little too strong for her. The rest of the time was sun bathing, chilling out and massage plus I had my nails done (though it felt like torture at times) as well as my nose and ear hair trimmed. The boat toured another island then we took the short distance by coracle, the traditional tub row boat. On land the locals were fixing their fishing nets and kids running to greet us.
Back to the hotel for 3.30pm and after some faffing about we decided to have a disco nap. With only 30 mins of closing our eyes the hotel's disco soundsystem pumped out sickly sweet Xmas songs at loud volume. It competed with the traffic tooting and Communist tannoy. The music kept skipping around but generally an annoying version of 'I want to wish you a Merry Christmas' was replayed over and over.
Long, our tour rep had booked us at the Good Morning Vietnam restaurant, an Italian. Excellent food and we gave each other our xmas presents with Kerry giving me the funniest t-shirt (Robocop on a unicorn) and my paragliding experience for Kerry.
We went on to the Sailing Club for a special party night. For about £3 entry we got a free vodka and mixer and a schedule including Chinese dragon dancing and some Cuban dance band. It was a very sedate audience apart from a few American graduates who danced about like Napoleon Dynamite. The beach and bar was very plush.
