Future Cinema does Ghostbusters at the Troxy, London

Image
I must have seen Ghostbusters a dozen times with two and a bit of them at my old hometown cinema when it was first released in 1984. I say 'and a bit' as the third time I tried to see it I had arranged with a school friend to meet outside the cinema. As I was so keen to meet him and get good seats I was at the start of the queue. As the doors opened and everyone crammed in my 11 year old mind told me I would meet my friend inside. Being dropped off by his mother they probably thought I hadn't turned up so called my own mum. Whilst I started to watch the film oblivious to the worry caused, I noticed my mum was talking to the cinema's manager looking very worried but decided to duck my head and try to ignore her. Somehow it worked as my mum and manager went back down the stairs to the foyer. Thinking I'd gotten away I continued to watch the film up to the film's library scene. Unfortunately, instead of hearing Bill Murray's voice it was blanked out by t...

How to take stunning pictures with Suzi Perry

Image
Blink Films, the producer of 'How to take stunning pictures' was located slap bang in the middle of Shoreditch with plenty of Nathan Barley types looking very cool (naturally I felt at home). Got to meet the other photographer, Suzanne who will join me and Martin Parr in Brighton on Monday. Suzanne has a great blog called some things we did and seems to be better at photography than me. Also met another photographer who had done his stint with his assigned expert having been down in Eastbourne. Found out later he does Parkour. One slightly annoying change was that we wouldn't be able to use our own cameras. Instead we'd be loaned some Panasonic Lumix shooters. Product placement perhaps? After a chat with the researchers a slightly stressed 16 year old work experience girl (who will be doing Latin and 3 other A levels) walked us over to the warehouse-like flat studio where we'd film the very short intro of ourselves in the company of the Queen of Channel 5, Suz...

BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride 2010

Image
Image by Ginger DJ via Flickr Our cocktail party on Friday went quite well despite the weather and rubbish England performance. Didn't actually get to see much of the football with the bbq, firepit and cocktails to prepare. Then the rain started. The tarp across the pergola was a blessing and it didn't spoil the evening. Really appreciated that everyone understood the 3am curfew so I could get some decent sleep before Sunday. Plus no breakages! Saturday evening was a sobering early night at 9pm with a sleeping pill. Beforehand I was searching for safety pins and packing bubblewrap with sellotape as I'd heard the courier transport would damage the bikes. In preparation for the British Heart Foundation London to Brighton Bike Ride, Kerry had bought £15 of health and energy food including 2 huge chocolate bars at nearly £3 each. I'd use these later like the special dynamite for the steam train in Back to the Future Part 3 (though didn't achieve the 88mph for t...

Happy 40th Birthday Julian

Image
Brighton buddy, Julian turned 40 this week and he wanted a big blow-out. Bored of Brighton clubs (especially Audio), we answered his birthday wish with a time-machine going (or what seemed like going back 10 years) to Ministry of Sound . I really didn't fancy the multiple train journey or the shuddering feeling of waiting for the tube stations to open at 6am on a cold Saturday morning so opted for the drive with James tagging along. Before driving up to London we gave Julian his special present of a Venture Bros. mug we'd designed. This went down extremely well and surprised that no one picked up the copyright infringement. Nowhere outside the US actually sells the merchandise due to copyright issues. It was the Gallery 's 15th birthday and had brought back some of the biggest name DJs to celebrate. Check this out for a golden oldie special: Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold , Seb Fontaine , Tall Paul, Lottie and more. For Kerry and me, this really was a nostalgic journey...

Your next meal will be Inamo

Image
Thursday of our week's holiday was up to London for some Christmas shopping (early I know) and to have a special dinner at Inamo , the asian restaurant with the interactive, electronic display menu (and other cool features) on the dining table. Our shopping wasn't the success we had hope for. Whether we've just spoilt each other for so long at Christmas, outdoing the last or it was just a bit wrong to think about buying presents, there was nothing that  really inspired us to buy. The Mercedes McLaren F1 in Selfridges got close, promoting some luggage but seeing Martine McCutcheon book signing didin't. At the moment I'd be happy for a monster bag of Malteasers and Kirin. Halfway up Wardour Street in Soho is Inamo. The table projection and décor was every bit as futuristic and desogner cool as I'd hoped for. With a quick demo of the table controls we were changing the virtual table cloth colour and pattern, viewing the kitchen webcam, ordering drinks, scr...

Barbican does Brazil

Image
Whilst Kerry had her monthly mop chop I decided to view the Brazilian art exhibition, Tropicalia at the Barbican . This was the first time I'd ever been to the Barbican and the building site entrance and dull concrete didn't impress at first. After the confusing entry, more disappointment came with no photography being allowed so have used their website graphic above. However, this exact graphic had nothing to do with the art inside which was slightly disappointing. Instead the majority of the art displayed were old 70's experimental concept art to test other senses. With no photos allowed I tried to take notes along the way. First up were some welder-like goggles with circular-mirrors attached to the front then another pair of goggles on the opposite side. Next a tray of sports related balls, tennis, ping-pong etc. Random or what. Further on a TV screen showed a film of a moustached man laying a see-through sheet of plastic over a woman and touching her through it. My ...
