HD heaven Last week was a shock to the bank balance. I took the plunge to buy our new HD television, getting the Sony Bavia 40" KDL-40Z4500 from the Electro-Centre . I realised that prices at some places were going up after the January promotions, other places were running out of stock, plus I figured prices would only go down in the summer when they're about to replace the model. Having ordered it Tuesday night we received it Friday afternoon. Friday evening was setting up the 40" monster connecting the Sky box, PS3, Wii and DVD/HD recorder. Watching Blade Runner Blu-Ray was amazing picking up details I'd never seen before and colours so rich, it was like a different film. The demo of Resident Evil 5 looked amazing as well with a deeper level of detail. I tried a normal DVD connecting via the HDMI lead and the picture quality again impressed. I did my husband duty of watching the Sex and the City film on Friday night. I can handle the normal 30 minutes format of the TV programme which can be quite funny but 148 minutes of fluffed up nothingness made me reach for the laptop. Even Kerry commented that it made women look like brand junkies with too many product placements. Our Burnt Flesh Festival party preparations are going well overspending on the Halloween decoration. The house will get a proper haunted make-over ready for the big night. Even Sasha, our cat has got into the spirit of the party with his own costume (I can't believe how well he posed for the camera). The home improvement plan also took its toll over the weekend as we had two major jobs to do: 1) erect the new shed and 2) remove the plaster from the fireplace. This is the title of a French film I'd been wanting to see for awhile and was based on a book and true story. Elle magazine editor-in-chief Bauby suffered a stroke which affected everything apart from his mind and one of his eyes, which doctors described as 'locked-in syndrome'. He could only communicate by blinking his left eye, one blink for yes, two for no. If he wanted to say more a translator had to read out a frequency chart of all letters - so, in French it was E S A R I N T U L. It was this system that he used to write his last memoirs i.e. this film. There were some genuinely funny moments with Bauby's inner monologue and some very sad ones pulling at the heart-strings. The art style and direction were excellent using Bauby's one-eyed view in places (the sewing up of his other eye will make you cringe) throughout conveying what could have been a very dull film. Sunday was visiting a couple of garden centres for some new trees since we chopped down the Ash....
