Hello Internetworld, goodbye bike

Image
So Tuesday was supposed to be a stress-free day out in London for an exhibition on internet marketing but turned out to be a gutting experience. Cycled to Brighton station and locked it in good view of a CCTV camera, all just before my 8:16am train. Internet World was at Earl's Court which had loads of free seminars on CMS , social media , email marketing, etc. plus exhibitors of services and hosting. Some good presentations attended but later double the amount of people wanted to see the same ones as me so missed out on a few. Some of the exhibitors knew their target market very well having leggy models handing out flyers and a F1 car with a driving simulation to try. Lunch was a joke opting for an off-site cafe and a coronation chicken sandwich which had less chicken than c hicken's dandruff. The only highlight in the afternoon was another exhibitor gimmick of what looked like a guy dressed in an inflatable suit but could have been a robot controlled remotely which wav...

Web habits

Image
Work's been a little slack lately waiting for others to do their bit. Ever since the volunteering I did in November and meeting a number of local ' social media ' experts I've been addicted to Twitter. It's quite handy having a job that means I can experiment with these web technologies. I've never needed to worry about getting caught on Facebook as I can say I'm 'researching' though others would probably say 'stalking' or the industry technical term of 'lurking'. The video below (think of me as the bearded, baseball hat-wearing guru) lampoons this new trend of marketing though from the Twittering I see from such experts I really wonder whether the industry is getting away with offering these services or if their clients are really wearing the emperor's new clothes . I've been to a couple of interesting web/social media seminars and presentations lately. Switch off now if you're not really bothered. First of all its w...

Cadbury's new advert

Image
I always like being the first to share new things but never chocolate - its all mine, mine, mine! Mixing two passions of mine, chocolate and marketing , this is going to be everywhere very soon. The tune sounds quite good and the video entertaining all for a semi-shameless plug at Cadbury's Fairtrade chocolate. Enjoy!

Revels with a cause

Image
The marketing people behind this are genius! The chocolate Russian roulette game of Revels have launched a Big Brother style eviction campaign. If there's a flavour you don't like then vote it out. Go to Revels Eviction website now where you can evict the flavour off in style e.g. rocket, golf club, remote control car off the cliff. Shame there's no baseball bat or sawn-off shotgun option. There's also a Facebook group. Here's my soapbox moment for voting:- Revels are lying to you! They say that Caramel is included but its actually her evil twin brother Toffee. That hardened, unloved bully boy bribed Revels, kidnapped his sister and has been getting away for too long robbing and beating up the other flavours for their lunch money and kicking your teeth in. Only Coffee flavour can save the day! Vote off Caramel!!

Web 2.0 wonders

Image
Ignore this part of the entry if you don't want to hear about my work and skip to the 3rd paragraph. My job has got a little more interesting over the past few weeks and I'm actually using the skills I've picked up from doing my blog, photos, Facebook and the degree I did. I'm now expected to come up with a web strategy for the organisation I work for (too complicated to explain here) to ultimately increase their web statistics. Last week I attended a seminar hosted at the Channel 4 building near Victoria station in London where some web experts from BBC, C4, ITV and some agencies presented social web media, networking and the buzzword of 2007/8 - Web 2.0. It wasn't that useful as I'd already knew most of what they were saying and even disagreed with some of them. However, it was a day out of the office, free lunch and getting paid to sit in Channel 4's downstairs cinema was quite cool. The massive '4' metal sculpture at the front of the building was...

Burdened Optimist - that's me!

Image
If you're into Marketing and have read the background as to why I'm blogging you might like this. Taken from Mosaic's new segmentation report:- "Burdened Optimists contains confident… married couples who live in mortgaged properties in areas of good employment opportunities. " ".. many of whom have built up considerable debts in an attempt to emulate middle class lifestyles. " "Burdened Optimists is particularly common in towns such as Gillingham and Portsmouth (not far from Southampton) in which local authorities have not traditionally been big builders of council houses and which have a long tradition of working class owner occupation. Many of these homes are of a kind that suit the needs of the first time buyers and many owners are in their mid to late twenties. At this stage of their life cycle two earners are needed to obtain the multiples of earnings that lenders require in order to qualify for a mortgage on a decent property an...
