Bunny and the Bull - the Boosh it isn't

Image
I ignored the rumours and believed the hype (and some of the media reviews). But it was mainly down to pledging my support to the Boosh family being produced by Baby Cow, the producers behind Noel Fielding and Julian Barrett 's surreal Mighty Boosh . Only the Duke of York's was showing the flick and as we entered the foyer I nearly stepped on local Oz legend and cinema patron, Nick Cave . He didn't hang about as I think he saw the previous Australian film. Turnbull or Bull to his mates has been stuck in his flat for over a year, refusing to come out and begins thinking back to his Eurpoean road trip with Bunny. Cue elaborate scenes and visuals integrating Bull's flat and contents with the holiday that would make French director Michel Gondry green with envy. It was good to hear Rich Fulcher ( Bob Fossil ) voice the seafood restaurant chain phoneline but the humour highlights are few and far between. Another Boosh regular, Richard Ayaoade (Saboo) appears as a very d...

Mighty Boosh in movie and more

Image
Flicking through our local Picture House cinema magazine and there's the odd film or two to get excited about. First of all, its not Mighty Boosh the movie but most of the cast and production team have created Bunny and the Bull which is out on 27th November. It looks like the same spanglely, dream-like, colourful look of the Boosh plus the characters look like Noel Fielding had too much cheese the night before and spawned from his dreams. The plot looks a little thin as a sort of road movie described as Sideways meets Withnail and I. Its already been shown at the Toronto International Film Festival but at the time of writing the web page wouldn't load properly as there seems to be a video file embedded. If you have Facebook or Twitter , why not follow them. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was Heath Ledger's last film and his role has been partially filled by Jonny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law. Expect weirdness and a grand style from Terry Gilliam. A Serious ...

Whilst searching for unusual Christmas presents I came across the Forbidden Planet website and saw these. They're on pre-order only at the moment but supposedly in time for Christmas. (Click on each photo to pre-order and view more details). For £20 you get two characters at 4.5 inches high designed by Pete Fowler, who does the Monsterism series.

Mighty Boosh Live in Brighton

Image
After seeing the preview show back in August, I hadn't set my expectations high for the actual paid for show in Brighton. Although we bought our tickets way back last year in November I thought we'd be a lot nearer the front especially being a member of the Modwolves fan club and being a day earlier than the general public were allowed to buy theirs. Unfortunately, this was not the case as we were to the far left with about 200 seats getting a better view. Another gripe was the early start and no chance to buy drinks - damn that Brighton Centre for running a tight(arsed) ship. There were quite a few changes for the better with many of the fragmented scenes re-ordered including the Honey Monster (I won't say when and how in case you haven't seen it). I think the Boosh management have been listening to their public (they may have even read my blog but I may be getting cocky now) as they included Series 3 character favourite, Crack Fox . Rolled on in a huge wheelie bin su...

The Mighty Boosh new live show review

Image
Thanks to my Modwolves fan club connections I managed to win exclusive tickets to see the brand new live show from the Mighty Boosh on Saturday. After our (unsuccessful) Thames boat ride we made our way over to 3 Mills TV studios in Bromley on Bow. If you don't want to know what's in the new live show then you'd best not read this as it will spoil the surprise. However if you want to know a summary of how it went then I'll say now, the performance was slightly worrying with only a week to go. There's a lot more mini-sketches and no real story compared to the previous tour. There's some great gags, some surprises but if it wasn't for their natural talent and personality the show would be slightly disappointing. Hopefully they'll put in some practice, improve the sketches that didn't quite work and maybe even come up with some new ideas. So, if you really don't want to know what happens in the show stop reading now, you have been warned. Mighty Boo...

It's an outrage!

Image
In the immortal words of Tony Harrison, "it's an outrage". If you haven't seen the Sugar Puff advert ripping off the Mighty Boosh's crimping then prepare for a sick feeling of commercialism. No wonder Barrett and Fielding are threatening legal action according to the Sun . Not a good start to the day for me. Last night I twisted my ankle at capoeira doing a kick, spin, kick snagging the bottom of my jogging bottoms under my foot (I had to bike 1.5 miles home after that). Woke up later then we should and had a million things going on in the space of 15 minutes with a skip being delivered, cars needing to be moved, cat needing feed and cat litter emptied plus the normal getting ready limboing around dust sheets.

Don't arm wrestle a pirate

Image
I've managed to buy some Mighty Boosh tour tickets for Brighton Dome a day before their release thanks to the Modwolves club I'm a member of. It's finally paid off and will hopefully get front row seats for their live show next November. The same club/mailing list also promoted a great cartoon joke book called 'Don't arm wrestle a pirate' which the above image is from. Perfect as a Christmas present. They also have a MySpace entry which features more drawings.

Moaning and Modwolves

Image
Moan of the week: The Acer laptop we bought a few months ago came with the Vodafone Mobile Connect for free (like broadband anyway). Thought I'd try and set it up this week only to discover after a few phonecalls and downloads that the laptop is incompatible with the datacard software. I think Acer have some explaining to do. Otherwise, we've been looking at NZ places to go for our holiday next year. Finally finished Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on the DS. Now looking forward to getting the next one. Modwolves: A name you should get excited about if you like the Mighty Boosh . Launching next week will be their fan club for £10 membership plus a load of jiffy bags to send them. As well as a sew-on badge, they'll offer exclusive live gigs to test material on them.

Mighty Boosh mini-pop

Image
You can't NOT love this type of thing. Whether it's guessing who they are or looking in wonder at how a few coloured pixels can translate into iconic pop-art heroes. Mighty Boosh has made it to this heady heights of cult fame and I see even My Name is Earl has one too. Check out the original source at FlipFlopFlyin Other news is that Global Gathering have released Saturday only tickets. Problem though is that they haven't said when any of the acts are on.

Comedy suicide

Image
Managed to watch Snuffbox last night and looks like another comedy suicide. You can so tell that Fulcher and Berry wrote the material with Berry's English surrealism blended with the perverse and a little too crude humour of Fulcher. The format of the show was quite clever using the central characters and a plot using their unusual relationship to link each episode, whilst filling it with a mixture of random sketches and character background. If you remember Bang Bang Its Reeves and Mortimer you'll know how random some of their sketches were and for me both just missed the funny target. The crudeness gets a little uncomfortable at times peaking at the Le Piss and Le Poo fashion sketches whilst other sections rely on Fulcher's attempts at characters that are one-dimensional. There were a couple of laughs with Rich Fulcher 's date observer sketches and his time-travel back to 1888, simulating his personal problem to the Victorian ancestor of Berry (here Berry used...

Student stand-up comedy

Weekend was a bit of chore with a builder friend coming into to doing our hall and stairs wall plastering. Bless him for taking on the job but making us get up to let him in for a 8am start on Saturday morning then pissing off at 1:30pm, then promising to arrive at 9am, then turning up at 9:30am and then going at 3pm didn't put him high on the popular list. Still, he did a great job. Problem now is the condensation dripping everywhere until the walls dry properly - no wonder I'm feeling rough around the gills today. With the early starts that weekend we resorted to TV based entertainment and rented the DVD of Sky Blue . I'd read reviews for this awhile ago, all praising the artwork but slating the story and pace of the film. Shame really as 7 years to produce 90 minutes of classy animation to be failed by a storyline so basic it made all the long brooding scenes of directed emotion drag into snoozeville. It either needed more violence and character building or made ...

New Year smell not like new trainer smell

Image
Everyone goes on about new car smell especially the yanks but new trainer smell is the new new car smell. New trainer smell is great. It’s a mix of new rubber, leather, glue, sweatshop kid sweat and a joint government/Nike conspiracy of an addictive cocktail of drugs to make you want to buy new trainers. During the peak of my sneaker-snorting addiction in the mid-90's my life was ruined, my girlfriend had left me, I had to declare bankruptcy and I couldn't leave the house without strapping on a new trainer to my nose. My only hope was the trainer equivalent of the Betty Ford clinic, the Jordan Shelltoe Priory. Salvation was through the bare foot, beach walking treatments, weekly tests of walking past JD Sports without entering and the final test of walking on hot coals. A number of times the staff caught me drawing logos and symbols on my feet which escalated to me claiming I had invented the world's first invisible and lightest Air Max. Creosote was substituted a...
